UPSC Civil Services Exam 2025 – Full Details (Subjects and Marks)

The UPSC Civil Services Exam is conducted in three stages:

1. Preliminary Exam (Prelims):

The Prelims consists of two papers:

  • General Studies (Paper I) – 200 marks. This paper includes topics like History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Environment, Current Affairs, etc.
  • CSAT (Paper II) – 200 marks. This includes comprehension, reasoning, mental ability, basic numeracy, etc.
    Note: CSAT is qualifying only – you need to score at least 33% (66 marks) to qualify.

The Prelims is objective (multiple choice) and only qualifying in nature. The marks are not counted in the final merit list.

2. Main Exam (Mains):

The Mains is descriptive and includes 9 papers, out of which 7 papers are counted for merit and 2 are qualifying:

  • Paper A – Indian Language (Qualifying) – 300 marks
  • Paper B – English (Qualifying) – 300 marks
  • Paper I – Essay – 250 marks
  • Paper II – General Studies I (History, Geography, Society) – 250 marks
  • Paper III – General Studies II (Polity, Governance, International Relations) – 250 marks
  • Paper IV – General Studies III (Economy, Science, Environment, Security) – 250 marks
  • Paper V – General Studies IV (Ethics, Integrity, Aptitude) – 250 marks
  • Paper VI – Optional Subject Paper I – 250 marks
  • Paper VII – Optional Subject Paper II – 250 marks

You can choose any one optional subject (from a list provided by UPSC) and write two papers on it.

Total marks for Mains (Merit papers only): 1750 marks

3. Interview / Personality Test:

If you qualify the Mains, you will be called for an Interview, which is of 275 marks.

Final Selection:

Final merit is calculated based on:

  • Mains Exam: 1750 marks
  • Interview: 275 marks
  • Total: 2025 marks

The top rankers are allotted services like IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS, etc., based on their score and preferences.

The UPSC Civil Services Preliminary exam for 2026 is scheduled for May 24, 2026, with the Main exam starting on August 21, 2026. The notification for the exam will be released on January 14, 2026, and the last date to apply is February 3, 2026.
